How it works

Verification and the Stratum proxy

How the NonceWard Stratum proxy verifies every RandomX share, measures hashrate from difficulty, forwards work to the renter's pool and catches cheating.

Why a proxy#

Hashrate claimed by a provider, or read from a pool dashboard, cannot be trusted or checked. NonceWard puts its own Stratum proxy between every rig and its target, so the hashrate used for payment is measured by NonceWard from shares it verified itself.

rig (XMRig, login nw_…) ──▶ stratum.nonceward.com:3333 ──▶ renter's pool or solo node
│ (or the benchmark / idle pool)
                                   └─ per-window counters ──▶ NonceWard escrow

What the proxy checks#

For every share the rig submits:

  1. Job and nonce: the job must be current (stale jobs are refused) and the share must not be a duplicate.
  2. RandomX hash: the proxy recomputes the RandomX hash of the share and compares it with the hash the miner sent. A mismatch means a fake share: the connection is dropped, the window is flagged (escrow pays 0 for it) and the rig is flagged for review.
  3. Difficulty: the share's difficulty is added to the rig's counter for the current 10-minute window.

Shares that are strong enough for the renter's target are forwarded to the renter's pool or solo node, so the renter's pool credits the work as usual.

How hashrate is measured#

On average a miner computes as many hashes as the difficulty of each share it finds, so:

text
verified hashrate (H/s) = sum of verified share difficulty in the window ÷ 600 seconds

Only this number is used: for the benchmark (lower of two windows), for marketplace uptime, and for escrow settlement. Numbers reported by the provider or by the pool are never used.

Where the rig mines#

Rig stateTarget
Benchmarkthe benchmark pool (pool.supportxmr.com:3333), credited to the provider's own Monero address
Not rentedthe same public pool, for the provider's idle-mining address
Rentedthe renter's target (any public Stratum pool, optionally with TLS, or a solo endpoint such as P2Pool)

Limits and honesty notes#

  • Short windows are noisy: share finding is random, so a single window can read a little above or below the true hashrate. The 70% threshold leaves room for that.
  • The proxy sees the IP address of connected rigs (to protect the service from abuse); it is not stored with your account.
  • Mining rewards depend on the renter's pool or node and on luck. NonceWard verifies work, not income.
